Hurricane Update from August 31, 2010

Well we are doing great here. We feel very very fortunate to be living on the UVI campus. The security, the administration and others have taken really good care of us. Our neighbors hung out at our place off and on and we helped each other out with bailing water during flooding, sharing of tea and food etc. It was a great bonding time.

Security came out during the storm to let us in a neighbors home so we could bail her place out as well. She was flooding into our apartment below. We were impressed with how quickly security showed up.

The campus is a mess with tree limbs down all over the place. But the buildings survived with minimal damage. We went out this morning and walked the campus trying to help with the clean up. But the crew here had things under control really well. Luna picked lots of various fruits from the ground. We are going to research about them later today. But she has started the smelling and cutting up of them to see if she can tell what they are from that.

The island over all seems to have been spared as well. There is no electricity in most places, some roads are flooded and trees are down all over the place. But for a category 4 hurricane this seems pretty minimal.

On the UVI campus we have running water, hot water, clean water, a generator allowing us the luxury of electricity and an even better view of the beach due to trees that have fallen. We are extremely fortunate for this as well.

We do not have cell phone service but we do have cable and internet. I think the cell phones right now will only allow emergency calls to be made.

Now if Fiona will stay a small storm and she doesn't change her route we will be ok. Otherwise tomorrow night this could start all over again.
