Eccentricities of our not so humble abode

1. We have just moved into a very large and spacious rental house high up on the mountain. We can see the center of town from our patio. We also have a beautiful view of the bay, a few islands and where the cruise ships come and go. The view and location are truly spectacular.

The landlord lives below us and he built the house. I think he bought the blue prints from someone else. But he hired some men and created a home for himself on the side of a rockJ

Anywhere you live on the island no matter how modern the house seems it will still have its own eccentricities. In our case there are many. Most are more humorous rather than obnoxious. I will do my best to describe the home as well as possible.

The house is huge. Two floors with four bedrooms and two bathrooms, wrap around porch on the third floor and a washer/dryer hook-up (this is not usual to find). We have a roommate who is also a professor at the university. She is living on the top floor in the master bedroom/bathroom.

There is a beautiful front door, truly beautiful. However you can only reach it from inside the house. The way you walk in is through the side door, which is a sliding glass door off the only stairs up to the house. When you walk in the side door you can see straight ahead the sliding door to the patio. The first room you enter is the living, dining and kitchen. No walls, all very spacious with good air flow. However the kitchen has a wrap around u-shaped counter and sink. It is done smaller than the room needed with all the space it has to offer. So only about one person can fit in the kitchen to cook at a timeJ. The kitchen cabinets are pretty large but have no shelves. And the doors were put on upside down. So the one in the corner you can only open one door at a time. The window at the sink is partially covered by the cabinet attachment. And the other window is partially covered by a counter top. There is a really small bathroom on the main floor. How small is it? It is so small that there are no mirrors, shelves or cabinets, but it does have a window that opens which is needed at times. Upstairs in the master bath/bedroom the bathroom is bigger than the bedroom. The closets have no shelves and they are not really closets per se. The bathroom has one window that opens but it is in the closetJ

The driveway is just absolutely crazy. I am still scared to drive up or down it. It goes straight up, literally our roommate’s car couldn’t make it up halfway. Not only does it go straight up it then has a right angle turn as you go up into another straight up. There is so little room at the top to turn around that you do a 20-point turn. I am sure I will learn soon how to drive up and down as walking up it carrying a 40lb. two year old is not an option.

My guess is that there will be many, many more quirks we will find while living here. These are just a few. As we are thankful for the water pressure we have and the hot water that comes out almost instantly when turned on. These are both luxuries on the island. The huge space we have to live in not to mention the cool breeze we get at night and the view is unbeatable. You can see the location here. Hopefully one day I will learn to upload pictures as well.
