Giving directions on the island

My daughter’s bday party at the beach got rained out. So we had to switch her party to a house party instead. I spent the first hour of the party giving out directions. This does not include the hour before the party giving out directions and calling people to change the location.

There are no street signs and when a street does have a name it could possibly have three or four different names. However, there are names for roads that go crazily up a hill. Like mule hill, fireburn hill, etc. I don’t even know them all. Or the name of the road is after the mountaintop's name. Like crown mountain. But most of the time you give directions using points of interest. Now some of these places could have been long gone for years but the turn is still at the old Exxon for example. I have no idea when the Exxon closed and it took some time to figure out where that is located since the Exxon is goneJ

If you just moved to the island giving directions is almost impossible. Since you won’t know any of the points of interest used in giving directions or the various names of hills and streets and such.

Here is how the directions went yesterday. And mind you people had to call back like three times to actually get to the party. Take Mafolie road up past fireburn hill. The street after pilgrim’s terrace is our street. Oh you don’t know pilgrim’s terrace. Well you know the road with the barbecue sign on it? No, not that either. Well you know the hair pin turn with the shipwreck sign? Yes, ok going down the hill after the hairpin turn. Oh you don’t know the hairpin turn. Do you know where the mafolie hotel is? Ok go past that. No not on the actual hotel road the road in front of the hotel that comes down from the castle…

This could go on for hours. Saying things like turn from the highway (which is actually a main street not a highway) at the justice building. You know the building that just got solar power where the police park. Ok if you are going down the highway and then past Emancipation Park and then the fort. Turn at the next light. You can only turn one way as the water is on the other side.

And my favorite question is what is the name of your street. Which is really the most invaluable information when giving directions. Since it is the same name as every street within a five mile radiusJ

It could take a while but people made their way to the party. And everything turned out to be fun and enjoyable. But OMG to giving directions!!!!!
